The dynamics of surface homeomorphism has witnessed a great development in recent years. Starting from some classical questions in dynamical systems, we will review the importance of the topological approach to the problems. In this talk, a central role is played by the remarkable concept of rotation number, introduced by H. Poincare a century ago.
